Mountaineers Fall to #13 UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  Western Colorado kept host University of Colorado Colorado Springs off the scoreboard for 43 minutes Sunday afternoon, but a goal by the No 13 Mountain Lions just before the halftime break opened the door in what would eventually become a 5-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over the Mountaineers.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score:
UCCS def. Western, 5-0
Records: Western 0-8-1 (0-1-1 RMAC), UCCS 6-1-1 (2-0)
Location: Mountain Lion Stadium, Colorado Springs, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Western produced few scoring opportunities during first-half action, but its defense was able to keep the Mountain Lion attack from creating dangerous scoring opportunities for almost the entire 45 minutes.
  • It was a corner kick opportunity by UCCS in the 44th minute, however, that broke the scoreless game as Emily Aguilar struck from just inside the top of the box to deposit into the left side of the goal what would be the game-winning kick.
  • The Mountaineers trailed only by that one goal beginning second-half action, but the Mountain Lions would break open the game with a goal just 32 seconds in, followed by another five minutes later.
  • They would later add two more goals to put the game out of reach.
NOTES FROM THE PITCH
  • Twice in the 83rd minute Western had chances to put a mark up on the scoreboard, but Gracie Lyman's shot was deflected off the gloves of UCCS goalkeeper Nylah Mirshafiei and off the right post, then Jenna Ralls's shot off that carom ended up on frame but saved by Mirshafiei.
  • Western would finish with a total of 15 shots, 6 on goal, while UCCS registered 26 shots with 12 on frame.
  • Mountaineer goalie Ashlyn Fitzpatrick would come up with seven saves and Mirshafiei kept a clean sheet with six saves.
