Lopers Earn Win over Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo.  Visiting University of Nebraska Kearney scored a pair of early first-half goals that helped the Lopers take a 3-0 non-conference win from host Western Colorado Sunday morning at Katy O. Rady Field.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Nebraska-Kearney def. Western, 3-0
Records: Western 0-7, UNK 2-3
Location: Katy O. Rady Field, Gunnison, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kearney's Billie Forrest opened the scoring, driving a shot from the right side of the box inside the left post to lift UNK to a 1-0 advantage in the fourth minute of the game.
  • Western registered the next four shots in the half, but the Lopers doubled their lead in the 14th, on a soft touch pass from Forrest to Daniella Iaquinta following a Mountaineer turnover in their defensive third.
  • Western would outshoot UNK, 8-6, in the half, but it was the Lopers who would take a two-goal lead into the halftime break.
  • The Mountaineers came out of the break and forged a 6-2 shots advantage, but UNK was able to overcome Western's pressure and add a third marker to move ahead 3-0 in the 75th.
  • Ellie Kubena, Jordan Welsh and Madilyn Reser would take the next three shots in the game, but none of the trio were able to find clear looks, each missing just off frame that allowed the Lopers to finish with the shutout victory.
FIELD NOTES
  • The Mountaineers would finish with a 17-9 shot advantage, but UNK put 6 of its 9 shots on frame against Western's 3 shots on goal.
  • Both Mountaineer goalkeeper Ashlyn Fitzpatrick and UNK goalie Susie Bovaird would end the contest with three saves apiece.
