INDIANAPOLISÂ The 46th Annual Midwest Classic closed out Sunday with Western Colorado wrestling placing 22nd overall, of 47 teams, with a total of 41.5 points.
The Mountaineers on Sunday had five wrestlers competing in their respective consolation weight brackets, having earned Day 2 appearances following results on Saturday.
Posting the highest finish for Western was
Vincent Cabral in the 157-pound bracket, where he earned a sixth place with Sunday's results.
Cabral began his morning with a 4-1 decision in the fifth round, and advanced again with a 13-6 decision in the sixth round. The next round resulted in a dominating 15-7 major decision, but his advancement was slowed in the consolation semifinal with a loss to 11th-ranked Nico Taddy of West Liberty University. That pushed Cabral into the 5th/6th-place match where 12th-ranked Mike Zacur of Seton Hill earned a major decision to put Cabral on the podium in sixth place.
Devin Gomez also earned a podium step for the Mountaineers, placing eighth in the 133 bracket.
Gomez posted an 8-4 decision in the fifth consols round, then followed that with a commanding 21-8 major in the next round. A tech fall loss in the next round, though, relegated Gomez into the 7th/8th-place bout where he dropped a 12-6 decision for an eighth place finish overall.
Eyan Chavez won his fifth round consolation match with an 8-5 sudden victory decision, but his stay in the bracket ended in Round 6 with a narrow 4-0 decision to fourth-ranked Isham Peace of Lander.
Both of Western's other wrestlers also had their day's ended by nationally-ranked opponents.
Hunter Richardson in his fifth round match within the 184 bracket dropped a 7-3 decision to 15th-ranked Brady Westall of Northern State, and in the 197 bracket,
Sage Harrison was defeated in his fifth round bout by 13th-ranked Jordan Blanchard of Wisconsin-Parkside, the eventual team champions of the Classic.
