SAN FRANCISCO  Mountaineer wrestling is taking the road farther West over the weekend, traveling to San Francisco State University to take on the host Gators, as well as first-time opponents Vanguard (Calif.) University and Menlo (Calif.) College on Saturday at the SFFCU Gymnasium at Don Nasser Family Plaza.

Western has a 7-3-1 overall record against S.F. State, the seven wins coming all in succession including last season's 39-10 victory over the Gators in Paul Wright Gym on Jan. 17, 2025.

The Mountaineers and SFSU both participated in the NCAA Division II Super Region VI Championships hosted by Western, with the Mountaineers placing third in the team standings and the Gators placing eighth.

Menlo (9-3 in 2024-25) and Vanguard (4-9) did not participate in an NCAA Regional, instead wrestling at the West Coast Qualifier of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Vanguard would place 14th at the 2025 NWCA Nationals while Menlo would capture the team championship behind three individual NWCA national champions.

Western's third-place finish at Regionals included one third-place finisher, Dean Noble, who would advance to the national tournament, and six fourth-place individual finishes as well as one fifth-place finisher.

Of those regional finishers, five return to Western's 2025-26 lineup. Roberto Estrada (125), Vincent Cabral (157), Sage Harrison (197) and Riley Butt (285) are back and looking to move up one or more spots from last season's fourth place finishes, while Devin Gomez (133) looks to move up from fifth and qualify for nationals.

For San Francisco State, they return the 141-pound national champion in Johnny Lopez, along with Kyle Botelho (2nd at regionals) who also advanced to DII nationals.

Only one of Menlo's 2025 NWCA national champions return for the 2025-26 season: Noah Elliott, who was the 149-pound champion at the NWCA event.

Western opened its 2025-26 schedule with an exhibition dual against visiting Northeastern Junior College, downing the Plainsmen 54-0 with all bonus-point match victories, including six pins.
