Harris Wrestles into Championship Bout at Rookie Open

GOLDEN, Colo.  Sophomore Miles Harris earned his way into the championship bout of the 149-pound bracket Sunday at the Colorado School of Mines Rookie Open, advancing the furthest of Western Colorado wrestling's non-varsity and redshirt participant's.

After an opening round bye, Harris advanced to the quarterfinals with a narrow 3-2 decision, making a first-period takedown stand up over the rest of the match over Colorado Mesa's Patrick Preston.

Harris' quarters match against Air Force's Augustus Maughan was a wild, high-scoring bout in which Harris scored pairs of takedowns in both the first and second periods, then withstood Maughan's two takedowns in the final period to move into the semifinals with a 16-12 victory.

Facing Kadin Mulford of the Colorado Outlaws wrestling club, neither Harris nor Mulford would earn points in the opening period, with Harris would get a takedown with 1:10 left in the second period and finished it off with a pin of Mulford to earn a spot in the championship match against Lincoln Gregersen of Air Force.

Gregersen was the aggressor from the start of that championship bout with an early takedown and consecutive nearfall points, eventually triumphing over Harris in a second period technical fall victory.

Erik Anderson had a strong start to his day in the 174-pound bracket, getting a second period fall in his first match and another pin, in just 63 seconds, in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals.

His run through the championship side of the bracket ended there, however, with a 7-2 decision, and Anderson was bumped from the consolation side of the bracket in a tech fall defeat.
