Fitzpatrick Clean Sheet in Draw at Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, S.D.  Goalkeeper Ashlyn Fitzpatrick finished with 10 saves in keeping host Black Hills State off the scoreboard in the Mountaineers' 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference soccer action.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score:
Western ties BHSU, 0-0
Records: Western 1-11-4 overall (1-4-4 RMAC), BHSU 4-8-5 (1-6-3)
Location: Black Hills Power Sports Complex, Spearfish, S.D.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • First-half action saw both teams with scoring opportunities as four of Western's five shots were on frame while five of the Yellow Jackets' 10 shots required goalie saves.
  • The Mountaineers' most dangerous scoring chance came in the final minute on a Lauren Kindt shot that BHSU goalie Rian Barthel deflected just wide of the right post to send the teams in the halftime break scoreless on the scoreboard.
  • The Yellow Jackets exerted attacking pressure during much of second half action, accumulating 14 shots to only 2 by Western, but Fitzpatrick each time anything was on frame was able to keep the scoreboard showing blanks, including a pair of dangerous scoring chances for BHSU in the 67th and 68th minutes.
  • Western made the most of its two shots in the second half, both making it on frame only to have Barthel turn them away, including the final shot of the game by Cianna Thomas in the 85th minute.
