KEARNEY, Neb. Western Colorado soccer played 20th-ranked Washburn (Kan.) University in a neutral-site, non-conference game Sunday, holding the Ichabods scoreless in what would be a 0-0 draw at University of Nebraska Kearney's Foster Field.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western ties Washburn, 0-0
Records: Western 1-4-1, Washburn 3-2-1
Location: Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field, Kearney, Neb.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washburn had the early edge in possession, working to get off three shots before Western's Natsuki Murakami would get a shot on frame in the 16th minute.
- The Ichabods were in control after that, reeling off nine unanswered shots before the halftime break. The Mountaineers' Aubree Orosco would need to make four saves in that span to keep the game scoreless as it headed into recess.
- The advantage in possession for Washburn continued into second-half action as it numbered six shots in 15 minutes, with two on frame and requiring Orosco to again hold the line and keep zeroes up on the scoreboard.
- A Western sub late in the 79th minute proved fortuitous as within the first seconds afterward, Taylor Bottoms from just outside the box put one on frame that Washburn goalkeeper Hailey Beck needed to save to prevent a Mountaineer lead.
- A minute later Murakami had an opportunity from the right side and 25 yards out, but her shot was wide of the right post.
- Orosco would make another save in the 81st and then would get a break in the 89th when an Ichabod shot clanged off the right post, the final opportunity for either team.
TURF NOTES
- Western would register just three shots in the game, two on frame, while Washburn would accumulate 22 with eight making it to Orosco who finished with a clean sheet from those eight saves.
- Another sign of the Ichabods' possession advantage in their attacking third was the 13 corner kick opportunities they earned.
- The Mountaineers and Orosco held Washburn scoreless two days after it had piled up six goals in a shutout victory Friday night at Foster Field.
