Roadrunners Eke Out Win over Mountaineers

DENVER  Goalkeeper Aubree Orosco made six saves, including at least three from point blank range, but host Metropolitan State University Denver picked up its game-winning goal on the completion of a scoring chance that had deflected off a Mountaineer defender, taking a 1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference soccer win Friday night over visiting Western Colorado.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: MSU Denver def. Western Colorado, 1-0
Records: Western 4-9-3 overall (3-5-2 RMAC), MSUD 9-4-3 (8-2-0)
Location: The Assembly Athletic Complex, Denver, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The only goal of the game was scored in the 48th minute when a through ball by a Roadrunner forward deflected off a defender, bouncing in front of Jenelle Arenibas who from six yards out crossed a shot on her second touch toward the lower left corner, the only shot on goal that would get by Orosco.
  • Natsuki Murakami had a nice look from near the top of the penalty box in the 54th but her shot was blocked by a defender before it could get on frame.
  • In the 74th it was again Murakami with a shot on goal, cranking one from far left of the box that Roadrunners goalkeeper Kylie Bach saved but couldn't keep hold of, but Bach was able to dive on the loose ball before any Mountaineer could race in for what could have been an easy touch into the back of the net.
TURF NOTES
  • The Western defense only allowed seven shots on goal during the game. The MSU Denver defense was equally as solid, surrendering just six shots total and three Western Colorado shots on goal.
  • Jordan Welsh, who had scored a goal in each of the Mountaineers' past two games, picked up one of the shots on frame, nearly opening the scoring just 42 seconds into the contest, only to have Bach erase the dangerous opportunity.
UP NEXT
The Mountaineers will continue their weekend on the Front Range with a Sunday RMAC game at Colorado Christian University, scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
