Mountaineers, Cowgirls Play to Draw

LAS VEGAS, N.M. Western Colorado's Kylie Hickox broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 73rd minute, but host New Mexico Highlands found the equalizer in the 87th that eventually left both the Mountaineers and Cowgirls settling for a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer action.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western ties N.M. Highlands, 1-1
Records: Western 3-4-2 (2-0-1 RMAC), Highlands 2-6-2 (0-3-1)
Location: Cowgirl Field, Las Vegas, N.M.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hickox scored her first of the season with some fancy footwork in the 72nd minute.
  • Bridget Feely made a long throw-in from the right touch line, landing her throw just ahead of Hickox who had maneuvered to the positive side of her defender.
  • Hickox collected the throw with her right foot, touched it to her left to gain clearance from one final defender and took a shot from just outside of the box. The placement of the shot was slotted inside the right post and beat Highlands goalkeeper Peyton Greener who was unable to race fast enough to her left to get a glove on the ball.
  • Western was able to maintain its narrow lead almost to the final whistle, almost being the key word.
  • Highlands rolled with possession to the left line where Renee Johnson broke clear and centered a pass into the goal box where Isavel Glenn's half step advantage on her defender allowed for a deflecting touch that rolled toward the back of the net for the tying goal.
  • Neither team was able to generate another shot, leaving the game deadlocked at that final whistle but allowing the Mountaineers to remain unbeaten in league play.

TURF NOTES

  • Highlands had an advantage in possession and shots for most of the game, finishing with a 19-8 lead in total shots, 11-5 lead in shots on goal, and 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Western had four scoring chances that were unfortunately negated by offsides whistles.
  • Aubree Orosco had another stellar day in goal for Western, surrendering just the one goal to go along with a 10-save effort. She is registering less than a goal-per-game average over her last five outings, reaching double figures in saves twice in that span.
