Griffins Shut Out Mountaineers in RMAC Clash

SALT LAKE CITY  Host Westminster University had the better of possession all game, stifling Western Colorado movement across the midfield line in what would become a 4-0 Griffins victory over the visiting Mountaineers in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer action Friday night.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Westminster def. Western, 4-0
Records: Western 3-6-3 overall (2-2-2 RMAC), Westminster 5-2-3 (3-1-2)
Location: Dumke Field, Salt Lake City, Utah

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A six-minute sequence early in the first half put Western in a hole that became too difficult from which to climb.
  • The Griffins scored the opening goal midway through the 13th minute, then early in the 19th added a second goal that made things even more difficult for the Mountaineers.
  • Western came out of the halftime break needing to cut into the deficit, but five minutes into the second half the Griffins would add another goal.
  • A fourth Westminster goal late in the second half was simply cosmetic in a game during which the hosts controlled possession for 65 percent of the game and held Western without a shot.
  • Aubree Orosco would start in goal and make seven saves before giving way to Ashly Fitzpatrick shortly before Westminster's first goal of the second half. Fitzpatrick finished with five saves in the loss.
UP NEXT
Western must regroup quickly as it welcomes 22nd-ranked Colorado Mesa University to Katy O. Rady Field Sunday at 3 p.m. for another RMAC match.
