MOORHEAD, Minn. Western Colorado out shot host Minnesota State University Moorhead Saturday afternoon, but the host Dragons kept the Mountaineers off the scoreboard while scoring a pair of second-half goals to earn a non-conference victory at Nemzek Soccer Field.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: MSUM def. Western, 2-0
Records: Western 0-1-1, MSUM 1-0
Location: Nemzek Soccer Field, Moorhead, Minn.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountaineers earned the initial pressure in the match, with Kylie Hickox in the 6th minute forcing the Dragons' Simone Lewald into her first save of the day.
- After a penalty kick miss by the Dragons' Madeline Etter in the 16th, Western's Natsuki Murakami then Hickox forced Lewald into action again, with shots on frame in the 22nd and 23rd minutes.
- The Mountaineers would add two more shots on goal before the end of the half, both saved by Lewald, before heading into the intermission knotted at 0-0 and preventing MSUM from registering even one shot on frame.
- The Dragons lit a fire under their attack early in the second half, though, getting off five shots, three that required Mei Hayashizaki to keep the game scoreless, in the first nine minutes. A set piece after a foul in the 61st opened the door for MSUM as it put one up on the scoreboard on an Allison Tharp goal.
- Western searched for the equalizer thereafter, registering the next four shots of the game, but the Dragons scored a backbreaking goal in the 85th that effectively iced the game for the home team.
- Hickox, who led all players with four shots on goal, added her last one of those in the 88th, but Lewald once again came up with the stop to preserve the shutout and prevent any Mountaineer hopes of a late rally.
