Sienknecht Nets 2 in Draw with Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif.  Caileen Sienknecht scored both goals for Western Colorado in its 2-2 non-conference draw with host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at Toro Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western Colorado ties CSU Dominguez Hills, 2-2
Records: Western 0-4-2, CSUDH 1-3-1
Location: Toro Stadium, Carson, Calif.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dominguez Hills notched the first three shots of the game, but Western gained control and reeled off the next five.
  • It was the Toros, however, that lit up the scoreboard first, with a goal by Alicia Covarrubias early in the 17th minute.
  • Sienknecht did not take long to find the equalizer for the Mountaineers, putting a lengthy shot into the top left corner a little more than four minutes later.
  • Dominguez Hills nearly broke the tie late in the first half, but Western goalkeeper Mei Hayashizaki easily came up with the low shot to push the teams into the break knotted at 1-1.
  • Sienknecht, whose shot at the 46:11 mark needed to be cleared away by a Toro defender before crossing the line, found the netting for her second goal in the 57th. Again from more than 35 yards out, this one from the right of center but curling into the same upper, right corner inside the post to elevate Western in front, 2-1.
  • That lead would last for not quite seven minutes, though, as CSUDH would earn the tying goal on a shot from Alyssa Villalobos in the 64th.
  • Tawny Roberts put one on frame for Western in the 67th, but her shot was saved by Abigail Escalante. And Dominguez Hills would get one more on frame, in the 69th, that Hayashizaki would save to keep the score tied at 2-2.
TURF NOTES
  • Sienknect's two goals equaled a two-score output in a match at St. Mary's (Texas) in September 2021.
  • Western's 23 shots and 9 corner kicks were both season highs.
  • Hayashizaki would finish with two saves for Western. At the other end, Toros starter Kylie Yuzon allowed both Sienknect goals and made four saves in 58 minutes of action, and Escalante finished the game between the pipes with one save.
UP NEXT
