Mountaineer Athletics Announces Hall of Fame Class of 2023

5/19/2023 12:00:00 PM

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado University's Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame will induct six new members with its Class of 2023, a group of inductees who contributed 31 All-American honors to Mountaineer athletics' current national award total of 1,103 All-Americans.

The Class of 2023—Brett Arrivey, Ryan Haebe, Philip Spratley, Barbara Szabo, Johnny Vigil, and Frank Mencin—will join the Hall of Fame during a Friday, October 13, ceremony in the Mountaineer Field House.

Brett Arrivey '17 (football) – The only four-year starting quarterback in Mountaineer football history, Arrivey is the program's career leader in passing yards (9,461), passing touchdowns (72), completions (894) and attempts (1,472). A four-year team captain, he also owns program records in single-season passing attempts (419 in 2013) as well as owning the top three spots in completions (1st-255 in 2015), and his 40 completions in a November 2013 game against Black Hills State remains a program high. Arrivey earned inclusion on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Honor Roll and the National Football Foundation-Colorado Chapter Academic First Team in 2016.

Ryan Haebe '15 (cross country, track & field) – Haebe's accomplishments in his first two years at Western were remarkable as he ran to the 2011 NCAA D-II cross country individual title—leading the Mountaineers to the team title—and the 3,000-meter steeplechase title at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship meet. In all, he collected seven All-American honors during that brief span, and his steeplechase time from the 2012 Portland (Ore.) Track Festival remains the fourth fastest in NCAA D-II history. Even more remarkable, though, was his return to action after suffering a traumatic brain injury following his NCAA steeplechase win and an appearance in the 2012 Olympic Trials. Haebe emerged from a coma and persevered through rehabilitation to return to the Mountaineer program and score points for the team in Western's RMAC indoor track & field title in 2015.

Philip Spratley '96 (cross country, track & field) – Though his first days as a Mountaineer were delayed a semester due to injury just weeks before his departure from his home in New Zealand, Spratley would quickly make up for lost time in the spring semester. In his initial RMAC indoor track & field championship he would capture the men's 800-meter crown, the first of what would be seven RMAC individual titles over his career. He was a three-time captain of the men's cross country team, including the national championship squad of 1995. A 12 time All-American in his career, Spratley still ranks fourth all-time in NCAA D-II in the men's indoor 1,500, and is third all-time in Western's history in the outdoor 1,500 and ninth on Western's indoor mile list.

Barbara Szabo '15 (track & field) – Before representing her home country of Hungary at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Szabo soared to record heights for the Mountaineer track and field program. She captured the RMAC high jump title in each of her four indoor and four outdoor conference championship meets, advancing to the NCAA D2 championship meet every indoor season and in her final three outdoor seasons. Szabo won four indoor national titles, outdoor titles her junior and senior years, and placed second to a teammate in her sophomore outdoor national meet. An eight time All-American, she holds Western's indoor and outdoor women's high jump records, and the indoor mark – 1.92-meters (6 feet-3.5 inches) – still ranks as the women's D-II record.

Johnny Vigil '98 (wrestling) – Vigil compiled a record of 119-39 as a member of a Mountaineer wrestling squad that earned four top-11 finishes at the NCAA Division II championships from 1994 to 1997. Wrestling at 118 pounds he earned three All-American honors at nationals, placing sixth in 1995, and third in 1996 and 1997 while the team placed 11th, 10th and 6th, respectively, in those years. Vigil became a starter in the 1993-94 season, after a redshirt season, and won the Colorado Collegiate tournament before becoming an alternate for nationals that year, setting up his eventual success the following years.

Frank Mencin '74 (Lifetime Achievement) – Mencin compiled an influential history both during and after his time as a member of the Mountaineer cross country, track & field, and skiing teams. In 1973 he ran to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA cross country championship, earning the program's first All-American honor. During his time as an athlete at Western he also added a pair of RMAC titles on the track, was a member of the Nordic ski team that participated in the NCAA championship events, and was voted the 1974 Paul W. Wright Award winner that is presented to the top male and female Mountaineer athletes. As the coach of Lake County (Colo.) High School he led the cross country program to 14 state championships and was inducted into the Leadville-Lake County Hall of Fame in 2005.

The Class of 2023 will be the Hall of Fame's 28th induction class and brings the total number of inductees to 154.
