GUNNISON, Colo. The Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame 2023 induction ceremony will be streamed live Friday evening, beginning at 7 p.m.
Inductees will take to the stage at the event hosted in the Mountaineer Field House. The six members of the Class of 2023 include:
Brett Arrivey | Football: 2012-16
Accomplishments include:
- The only four-year starting quarterback in Mountaineer football history
- Four-year team captain
- Program's career leader in passing yards (9,461), passing TDs (72), completions (894) and attempts (1,472)
- Owns top three spots in single-season record for completions (1st-255 in 2015)
- His 40 completions in November 2013 game against Black Hills State is a single-game program record
- Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference academic honor roll (2016)
- National Football Foundation–Colorado Chapter Academic First Team (2016)
Ryan Haebe | Cross Country, Track & Field: 2010-15
Accomplishments include:
- 2011 NCAA Division II cross country individual titlist, leading Mountaineers to team title
- 2012 3,000-meter steeplechase titlist at NCAA D-II outdoor championship meet
- Earned seven All-American awards in his first two years at Western State Colorado
- As of induction date, owns the fourth-fastest 3,000m steeplechase time in NCAA D-II history
- Qualified for and ran in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials
- Following a traumatic brain injury in 2012, persevered through rehabilitation to return to the Mountaineer program and score points for the team to help Western earn the league title at the 2015 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference indoor track & field championship meet
Frank Mencin | Lifetime Achievement: 1969-1974, 1980-1990
Accomplishments Include:
- Ran to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA 1973 Division II cross country championship, earning the program's first All-American honor
- During his time as an athlete at Western was all-conference in cross country and outdoor track in the 3-mile and 3,000-meter steeplechase. He also was a member of the Nordic ski team.
- Was voted the 1974 Paul W. Wright Award winner, presented to the top male and female Mountaineer athletes of the year
- Won the W Mountain race five times.
- As the coach of Lake County (Colo.) High School in Leadville, Colo., he led the cross country program to 14 state championships from 1980-1982 and 1984-1990. He also won two state championships in skiing as an assistant Nordic coach
- He was inducted into the Leadville – Lake County Hall of Fame in 2005
Philip Spratley | Cross Country, Track & Field: 1992-96
Accomplishments include:
- Captured the 800-meter crown in his first RMAC indoor track & field championship meet his freshman season
- Raced to seven individual RMAC titles in his career
- Earned All-American honors twice in cross country ('92, '94), three times in indoor track (1,500m '93 and '95, mile '96), and seven times in outdoor track (3,000m steeplechase '92 and '93; 1,500m '95 and '96; 5,000m '93, '95 and '96)
- At time of his induction, his indoor 1,500m time (3:45.40) ranks fourth in NCAA Division II history, and his outdoor 1,500m (3:44.45) is third on Western's all-time list
- A three-time captain of the cross country team, including the 1995 national championship squad
Barbara Szabo | Track & Field: 2010-15
Accomplishments include:
- Represented her home country of Hungary in the high jump event at the 2016 Rio Olympics
- Captured the RMAC indoor and outdoor high jump titles in each of her four years of competition at the conference championship meets
- Soared to the NCAA high jump title in all four years at indoor nationals
- Captured the outdoor NCAA titles her senior and junior years, after finishing second in her sophomore appearance at nationals
- An eight-time All-American
- At time of her induction, owns Western's indoor and outdoor high jump records, and her indoor mark (1.92-meters / 6 feet-3.5 inches) ranks as the NCAA Division II record
Johnny Vigil | Wrestling: 1992-97
Accomplishments Include:
- Wrestling in the 118-pound bracket at the NCAA Division II championships, earned three All-American honors— sixth place in 1995, third place in 1996 and 1997
- Western in those three years placed 11th (1995), 10th (1996) and 6th (1997) in the team standings
- Entered the starting lineup in the 1993-94 season, won the Colorado Collegiate tournament and was an alternate for nationals
- Captured the Colorado Collegiate title three times
- Compiled career record of 119-39
