Mountaineers season comes to an end, fall to Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. Western Colorado overcame adversity and managed to make the RMAC tournament. However, things just didn't click offensively in the quarterfinals of the tournament as they lost 64-31 to Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday (Mar. 1) night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers trailed early on in the game, down 7-0 with 6:36 left to play. However, Katie Dalton ended that dry spell knocking down a jumper that was assisted by Brooklyn Seymour. Before the first quarter ended Western came withing five-points (12-7) of tying the game after Dalton knocked made a layup, assisted by Natalie Jojola.
  • In the second quarter, the Mountaineers struggled to get things going as their first point in the quarter didn't come until the 3:29 mark on an Alexa Huff free throw. That would be the only point they scored in the quarter, resulting in the Western trailing 35-8 at halftime.
  • Courtney Humbarger knocked a three-pointer with 8:31 left – which was the Mountaineers first field goal since the 1:12 mark of the first quarter – cutting the lead to 37-11. Western played significantly better in the quarter scoring 11-points, five of those points coming from Emmery Wagstaff, three-points coming Humbarger, two-points coming from Anda Kuzmina and one-point from Samantha Coleman.
  • Western relied on the free throw line to get the majority of their points in the fourth quarter, knocking down nine free throws. The rest of their points came from a Coleman three-pointer. Unfortunately, while Western's offense improved in the second half, they lost to Colorado School of Mines.
COURT NOTES
  • Coleman was the leading scorer for the Mountaineers with eight-points, while Wagstaff pitched in with seven-points. Defensively, Seymour had a team high three steals in the game. Western shot 21.6-percent (8-37) from the field, 16.7-percent (3-18) from three and 52.2-percent (12-23) from the free throw line.
  • For the Orediggers every player pitched in, but they were led by Denali Pinto who had 10-points, Liz Holter and Shelby Nichols each scoring eight-points apiece. Sammy Van Sickle had sticky hands for Colorado School of Mines recording five steals in the game. The Orediggers shot 39.6-percent (21-53) from the field, 22.7-percent (5-22) from three and 81-percent (17-21) from the free throw line.
