Wagstaff’s double-double leads to Mountaineers first win

KINGSVILLE, Texas It took an extra quarter to decide a winner on Saturday night (Nov. 19). That winner of course was Western Colorado who came away with a 62-56 overtime victory. That win was head coach Adam Jacobson first win with the program.

With the score tied 47-47 to start overtime, both teams exchanged points – Rachel Cockman making two free throws, while Texas A&M – Kingsville knocked down a three-pointer giving them a one-point (50-49) lead. Emmery Wagstaff erased that lead and gave the Mountaineers a one-point (51-50) with 3:18 left to go.

A few seconds later, the same thing happened again this time Cockman giving Western the lead (53-52) by knocking down two free throws. With 48 seconds left in the game, Wagstaff increased the to 55-52 on a shot in the paint and then Alyza Aikins made two huge free throws that gave the Mountaineers a five-point lead - unknowingly at the time sealing the victory.

Western held onto the lead for the remainder of overtime. The closest the Javelinas got to tying the game was four-points with four seconds left to go.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team was able to take control of the game early on. But, when the first quarter ended the Mountaineers had a 10-8 lead. Cockman got things going for Western scoring seven straight points, to spark a 10-3 run. The other three-points came from Wagstaff who knocked down a three-pointer with 2:26 left to go in the first quarter.
  • The Javelinas offense got going before the first quarter ended as they closed the first quarter out on a 5-0 run. That run continued in the second quarter, leading to Texas A&M – Kingsville having a 13-10 lead with 8:39 left. The duo of Cockman and Wagstaff got going after that by scoring six-points between them – Cockman making two layups and Wagstaff sinking a jumper.
  • Yet, the Javelinas offense kept up with Western's scoring, putting the score at 19-16 in favor of Texas A&M – Kingsville. In the final two minutes before halftime, the Mountaineers managed to outscore the Javelinas 6-5 - on three made free throws from Sam Gueller and a three-pointer by Kylie Krise, resulting in Western being down 24-22 at halftime.
  • That lead was erased quickly to start the third quarter, thanks to two back-to-back three-pointers by Wagstaff, that gave the Mountaineers a 28-26 lead. A minute later Cockman would sink a free throw, giving Western a three-point lead, that held up for the majority of the quarter.
  • The Javelinas tried to retake the lead several times in the third. However, every time they got within one-point of tying Western responded and increased the lead back to three-points.
  • Brooklyn Seymour helped increase the Mountaineers lead to four-points (37-33), drawing a foul while also converting the contact layup. Then she went to the free throw line an completed the and-one. With 1:35 left in the third quarter – Western up 37-35 - the Javelinas took their first lead of the quarter, knocking down a three-pointer to give them a 38-37 lead.  
  • Wagstaff took the game over in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of the ten points – on a pull up jumper and back-to-back three pointers - that the Mountaineers scored in the quarter. Additionally, that second Wagstaff three-pointer gave Western a 47-46 lead with 23 seconds left to play.
  • Unfortunately, the Mountaineers were unable to close the game out in the fourth quarter after Texas A&M – Kingsville tied the game up at 47 all, leading to overtime.
COURT NOTES
  • Wagstaff finished the game with 25-points (9-of-21), 10 rebounds, two blocks and one steal. Right behind her was Cockman who had 16-points (5-of-12), nine rebounds, and one block.
  • As a whole, the Mountaineers shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field, 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from three and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the free throw line. Additionally, Western outrebounded the Javelinas 49 to 27.
  • For Texas A&M – Kingsville, they had three players in double figures (14, 10, 10) in the scoring category – shooting; 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three and 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the free throw line as a whole.

 Western Colorado will hit the road again for their next game on Saturday (Nov. 26) against Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico at 1 p.m.
