Mountaineers fight until the end

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado finished the Tracy Borah Duals with a 1-2 overall record, after falling 31-9 to the University of Mary.

Final Score: CSU-Pueblo def. Western Colorado, 37-9; Western Colorado def. New Mexico Highlands 30-20, Mary def. Western Colorado 31-9.

MAT NOTES
Western Colorado vs. CSU-Pueblo (L)
  • After trailing 5-0 to start the match, Zachery Flowers (133) scored the first points for the Mountaineers defeating Devin Lueck by a 9-7 decision victory.
  • The Thunderwolves won the next four matches giving them a 25-3 lead.
  • Cole Hernandez (174) would be the final Western wrestler to win a match, picking up the fall victory two-minutes into the second period.
Western Colorado vs. New Mexico Highlands (W)
  • The Mountaineers lost their first match to start the dual. However, similar to their previous match Flowers helped Western get their first points by pinning Xaydrian Perry 45 seconds into the match.
  • Alex Alvarez (141) followed that up with a pin of his own, which happen 1 minute and 45 seconds into the first period, leading to the Mountaineers taking a 12-4 lead.
  • The Cowboys would win the next two matches at 149 and 157 pound weight class, resulting in them taking a slight edge over Western. 
  • Kevin Meyer (165) turned the tide back in the Mountaineers favor pinning Miguel Lara (2:44).
  • Cole Hernandez (174) was the next Western wrestler to get a pin, defeating Christopher Dilworth (1:38) in the first period. Heading into the 184 pound match, the Mountaineers held a 24-16 lead.
  • New Mexico Highlands found a way to win the 184 pound match. But, it was the final match they won in the dual.
  • Colby Clatterbaugh (197) earned a 11-4 decision victory over Jayden Johnson.
  • Then Zachary Schraeder (285) won a barn burner over Julian Sanchez - earning an escape (1:39) and takedown (0:46) in the third period to force overtime. Despite being tired Schraeder got the job done earning a takedown (1:39) to win the match. 
Western Colorado vs Univ. of Mary (L)
  • The Marauders picked up back-to-back pins to start the dual (125, 133), forcing Western to battle back.
  • Which they did thanks to Dean Noble (141) who earned an 10-6 decision victory over Laken Boese and Jason Hanenberg (149) who defeated Trevor Fauver by a 5-2 decsion.
  • Univ. of Mary won the next five matches, but the Mountaineers made sure to end the dual on a positive note.
  • Sammy deSeriere wrestled his match and defeated Gerardo Jaime earning a 7-2 decision victory. 
UP NEXT
The Mountaineers will wrap up the Tracy Borah duals at 6 p.m., taking on University of Mary in Paul Wright Gymnasium.
