Strong second half by Adams State too much to overcome

GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado offense cooled off in the second half allowing Adams State to take over the game and walk away with an 64-47 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Adams State kicked the game off with the full court press, leading to Western turning the ball over and the Grizzlies taking an early 10-0 lead. That lead didn't last long as the Mountaineers battled back, thanks to 8-points by Samantha Coleman. After the first Western had an 19-14 lead.
  • The game tipped slightly in the favor of Adams State in the second quarter, outscoring Western 14-11. Yet, the Mountaineers still had a 30-28 lead at halftime.
  • Coleman was the leading scorer for Western at halftime with 10-points and Katie Dalton pitched in with seven-points of her own.
  • The Grizzlies offense heated up in the second, while the Mountaineers offense unfortunately cooled down. Western managed to extend their lead to three points (35-32) after a Courtney Humbarger layup with 5:56 left to go in third.
  • However, that was the last time the Mountaineers had the lead as Adams State went on a 9-4 run to end the quarter.
  • The Grizzlies took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring Western 18-8, helping them walk away with the victory.
COURT NOTES
  • Dalton was the leading scorer for the Mountaineers in the game with 14-points, followed by Coleman with 10-points of her own.
  • Defensively Coleman and Dalton shined, Coleman recording three steals and Dalton blocking two shots.
  • As a whole Western shot 39.1 percent from the field, 17.6 percent from three and 88.9 percent from the free throw line.
  • For Adams State, Angelline Nageak was their leading scorer with 14-points, three steals and a block. Their next highest scorer was Kayla Harris who had 12-points, four steals and two blocks. Kaitlyn Bell also made an impact in the game, recording 10 points and three steals.
  • The Grizzlies as a team, shot 46.3 percent from the field, 9.1 percent from three and 65 percent from the free throw line.
