Mountaineers celebrate seniors, fall to Adams State

GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's soccer team celebrated their seniors Parker Barnhardt and Caitlyn Cox on Sunday after their final game as a Mountaineer - a 2-1 loss to Adams State at Katy O. Rady Field.

The Mountaineers (1-8 overall, 1-4 RMAC) fell behind 2-0 in the first half after goals by Adams State's (2-4, 1-3) Niamiah Cervantes (ninth minute) and Sydney Wideman (29th minute - assisted by Carena Harrison).

Western got within a goal when, fittingly in her last game, Parker Barnhardt scored her first career goal in more than 3,400 minutes of play in the 68th minute to cut the Grizzlies' lead to 2-1 (assisted by Madison Caster).

However, the Mountaineers couldn't find the equalizer and fell to the Grizzlies. The loss combined with a Colorado Christian tie against Fort Lewis on Sunday eliminates the Mountaineers from postseason competition as ASU at 1-3 in RMAC play and CCU at 0-3-1 face each other on Friday in their final contest of the year with the winner taking the fourth-and-final spot in the division for the RMAC Tournament (in the event of a tie, Adams State would advance).

Jessie Jacobsen led the Mountaineers on Sunday with five of Western's nine shots taken - two on goal (Adams State took 14 shots - seven on target). Western's Grace Walker finished with five saves.
