Mountaineers fall to hot-shooting Black Hills State in RMAC semifinals

GOLDEN, Colo. --- The third-seeded Western Colorado women's basketball team fell to hot-shooting Black Hills State 67-62 on Friday in the RMAC Tournament semifinals at Lockridge Arena.

The Mountaineers (14-5) now will wait until 8 p.m. Sunday to see if their name is called when the NCAA Tournament brackets are released. Western Colorado entered the RMAC Tournament No. 2 in the West Region in the latest rankings and six teams will make the regional held in Grand Junction from March 13-15.

As for Friday, the Yellow Jackets (14-8) drained 10 of their first 17 3-pointers in the game, yet the Mountaineers were still right there as they tied it at 59 with 5:29 remaining after an Emmery Wagstaff 3-pointer ended a 7-0 run. The score was tied 61-61 with less than a minute left when BHSU's Morgan Ham drained two free throws with 25 seconds left to give the Yellow Jackets a 63-61 lead. The Mountaineers were fouled eight second later and split their free throws to cut the lead to one. 

Western was forced to foul and BHSU hit both with 13 seconds left to make it a three-point game at 65-62. However, the Mountaineers turned it over and the Yellow Jackets hit two more free throws to seal the game.

Hannah Cooper led the Mountaineers with 18 points and seven rebounds to go along with two steals and two assists, Wagstaff had 12 points and six rebounds while Samantha Coleman had 12 points and three steals.

The Mountaineers, the best shooting 3-point team in the conference, went just 3-for-17 from 3-point range compared to BHSU going 11-for-23.

BHSU was led by Racquel Wientjes (28 points) and Morgan Ham (21 points) as the duo combined to go 15-for-21 from the field - including 7-for-12 from 3-point range.
