GUNNISON, Colo. --- The No. 7 Western Colorado women's basketball team continues to show resolve in close games as for the second time this week the Mountaineers rallied in the fourth quarter to win at home - this time defeating Regis 71-65 Friday night at Paul Wright Gym.
The Mountaineers (11-1 overall, 10-1 RMAC) led 46-45 heading into the final quarter before the Rangers (5-7 overall, 5-6 RMAC) went on an 8-0 run to start the period and take a 53-46 lead with 7:14 remaining. Western answered as a 7-0 run capped by a
Emmery Wagstaff 3-pointer and a jumper from
Hannah Cooper tied the game with 5:12 remaining.
Regis regained the lead at 57-55 with less than four minutes remaining before
Samantha Coleman drained a 3-pointer in transition with 2:55 left to give the Mountaineers the lead at 58-57 - and Western wouldn't trail again. Wagstaff drove and scored as she was fouled with 1:25 left to make it 64-60 and the Mountaineers closed it out by going 7-for-8 from the line in the final minute to win by six.
This win comes three days after the Mountaineers came back and scored the final five points to beat Colorado Mesa 53-51 at Paul Wright Gym.
Wagstaff had 10 of her team-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to go along with eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Cooper finished with 20 points (10 in each half) with three rebounds and two assists while
Jessie Erickson had 11 points before fouling out.
The Mountaineers - who are in the top 15 in the nation in 3-point percentage - overcame their second straight game struggling from beyond the arc (5-for-17) by going 16-for-19 (84.2 percent) from the free throw line. It also helped that Western held Regis to 36.9 percent shooting from the field and limited the top rebounding team in the RMAC to just two second-chance points.
Whitney Jacob led Regis with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Grace O'Neill also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Tashika Burrell (16 points) and Erin Fry (10 points) also reached double figures.
The Mountaineers - winners of six in a row - face Colorado School of Mines - winners of seven in a row - 5 p.m. Saturday at Paul Wright Gym.
