Late Eagles Run Flips Scoreboard

CHADRON, Neb.  Western Colorado was unable to hold onto a late 51-47 lead Saturday evening, as host Chadron State College scored the final 13 points of the game to rally for a 60-51 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball victory at the Chicoine Center.

A Samantha Coleman 3-pointer had extended a lead that the Mountaineers had owned since Coleman's third quarter-opening trey broke a 24-24 halftime tie, but seven turnovers on its the next eight possessions following Coleman's late long-range bucket doomed Western over the final four minutes of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chadron never trailed over the opening two quarters – leading by as many as 11 (15-4) before an 8-2 run at the end of the second quarter pulled the Mountaineers even, 24-24, heading into the halftime break.
  • Emmery Wagstaff scored half the points in the run, including a steal and fast-break layup that provided Western with its first lead of the game (24-22).
  • Coleman's 3-pointer to open the scoring in the third quarter broke the tie, and the Mountaineers didn't trail again until Chadron's late run to close out the fourth quarter.
COURT NOTES
  • Coleman (16 points) and Grace Kirscher (11) led Western's offense, with Coleman knocking down 4-of-6 3-point attempts.
  • Samiyah Worrell scored a game-high 20 points for Chadron, finishing the game 5-for-8 from behind the arc and 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
  • Chadron went to the stripe twice as often (20 times) as did the Mountaineers. The Eagles hit 13 of those free throws, while Western was 6-of-10 for the night.
UP NEXT
  • Western will travel to Durango, Colo, for it next game, an RMAC contest Tuesday night against host Fort Lewis College. The Mountaineers earlier in the season defeated the Skyhawks, 72-59, in a non-conference matchup on Western's home court.
