Strong fourth quarter helps Mountaineers defeat Roadrunners

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado dominated in the fourth quarter scoring 31 points, as they went on to defeat Metropolitan State University of Denver 82-72.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers came out ready to go to start the game, holding a six point with 5:34 left to play in the first quarter, thanks to six points by Katie Dalton. However, the Roadrunners got going and cut the lead to two-points before the quarter ended.
  • Metro State picked up where they left off in the second quarter, scoring 22-points to Western's 16 as they went into halftime up 35-31. Allie Navarette was the leading scorer for the Roadrunners at halftime with 14-points, while Anda Kuzmina was the Mountaineers leading scorer with 8.
  • The Roadrunners started to pull away, leading by 10-points with 2:24 left, in the third quarter. However, the Mountaineers fought back.
  • Emmery Wagstaff scored six-points and Rachel Cockman scored two-points in the final two minutes, trimming the lead to 55-51.
  • Metro State's lead got erased within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, on four made free throws by Dalton, a jumper by Grace Kirscher and two made free throws by Ky Buell. A few seconds later Dalton sunk a jumper, to give Western a three-point lead.
  • The Mountaineers maintained the lead for the remainder of the game, on their way to earning their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.
COURT NOTES
  • Wagstaff led the way for Western scoring 16-points, and had help from Dalton who pitched in with 15-points of her own.
  • Buell, Samantha Coleman and Kirscher also were factors on the offensive end. Buell scored 10-points, while Coleman and Kirscher each had 10-points apiece. 
  • Navarette was the leading scorer for the Roadrunners with 23 points and six rebounds.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers shot 72.7% from the field, 50% from three and went 13-of 13 from the free throw line.

Western will be home again on Friday Dec. 17, taking on Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 p.m. Following the conclusion of that game, the Mountaineers will take on Regis University on Saturday Dec. 18, at 4 p.m.
