Mountaineers win second game of the 2021 TWU Tournament Challenge

DENTON, Texas  The Western Colorado University's women's basketball team came out victorious on Saturday after an explosive first quarter where they outscored Angelo State University 22-12, to eventually win 62-57 at the 2021 TWU Tournament Challenge.

Samantha Coleman and Katie Dalton led the Mountaineers in scoring as both scored double digits. Coleman put up an impressive 17 points to lead Western Colorado to victory, as Dalton recorded 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Western took an early lead and never let go. Leading the first quarter 22-12, the second quarter 30-22, the third quarter 47-36 and the fourth quarter 62-57.
  • The Mountaineers went on a 7-0 run at the end of the first quarter to get their wheels rolling, and then continued pressuring ASU until the fourth quarter.
  • After a good run in the first quarter, the Mountaineers were only able to put up eight points in the second quarter, but were able to hold Angelo to only 10 points.
  • The second quarter saw the lowest shooting percentage by both teams.
  • After halftime, Western Colorado bounced back to as Grace Kirscher scored five points right off the bat with a three pointer and a jump shot.
  • Mountaineer Katie Dalton kept the Mountaineers hopes alive in the fourth as she scored six unanswered points in the middle of the quarter, to help hold off the Belles.

  • By the end of the game, Western shot 48.9% for field goals, 30% from behind the arc and 65.2% from the free through line.
  • The Belles shot 36.4% for field goals, 17.6% from behind the arc and 50% from the free through line.
  • ASU was able to out rebound the Mountaineers as the recorded 38 rebounds the Western's 36 rebounds.
  • Western's starters of Coleman, Andra Kuzmina, Grace Kirscher, Ky Buell and Alexa Huff recorded 45 of the Mountaineers 62 points.
  • Coming off the bench for the Mountaineers, Katie Dalton put up 13 points.
  • Western Colorado's Brooklyn Seymour led the team in blocks as she recorded two in the game.
