No. 13 Western women defeat Black Hills State on the road in OT

SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The 13th-ranked Western Colorado women's basketball team tightened up defensively in overtime and defeated Black Hills State 70-61 Saturday in a matchup of two top-10 regionally ranked teams at the Donald E. Young Sports & Fitness Center.

The Mountaineers (7-1 overall, 6-1 RMAC) - ranked second in the D2SIDA South Central Regional Rankings - outscored the Yellow Jackets (6-3, 6-3) - tied for ninth in the regional rankings - 10-1 during the five-minute overtime, holding BHSU to 0-for-7 shooting from the field - including 0-for-3 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Western got a basket and two free throws from Mikaela Parker to start overtime. A steal by Taytem Coleman led to a Hannah Cooper layup with 1:46 remaining to make it a six-point game before Emmery Wagstaff drained a 3-pointer with 1:01 left to put the game away at 69-61.

Western led for much of the contest and held a 37-28 advantage early in the third quarter before a 12-0 Yellow Jacket run capped by a Morgan Engesser 3-pointer in transition gave BHSU a 40-37 lead with 6:03 remaining in the quarter.

But the Mountaineers bounced back and looked like they may pull away at the end of regulation as Samantha Coleman drained a 3-pointer from the corner with 3:42 remaining to make it 59-52. But an 8-0 run for BHSU capped by a Racquel Wientjes jumper with 1:49 left made it 60-59 Yellow Jackets. Wagstaff was fouled with 21 seconds left and split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 60-60. The Mountaineer defense stood tough as BHSU had a chance to win it as time expired, but its shot was off the mark.

Wagstaff paced three Mountaineers in double figures wit h17 points to go along with five rebounds. Taytem Coleman had 12 points and three steals while Mikaela Parker had 11 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal.

With Western's next game set for Friday at Adams State postponed due to COVID-19 protocol, the Mountaineers next play 5 p.m. Saturday at CSU Pueblo.
