COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Western Colorado moved up two spots from a year ago and placed fifth in the final RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup as the conference released the final standings Thursday - the Mountaineers' best finish since taking fourth in 2001-02.
WCU finished with 492.5 points, 4.5 points behind No. 4 UCCS and 59.5 points ahead of MSU Denver at No. 6. Colorado School of Mines won the cup for the fifth straight year.
Only fall and winter sports were calculated in this year's edition. The RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup is awarded to the institution that accumulates the most points over the year based on its teams' outcome in the RMAC's four core sports, along with three wild card sports (usually six before spring seasons canceled). The four core sports are football or men's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball, while the three wild card sports consist of three the top two in one gender followed by the top one in the other (usually the top three from each gender), which are designated by that institution's best finish in those non-core sports.Â
Total RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup points are calculated based on how the teams finish in the RMAC regular season standings. In the scenario where teams do not have regular season standings, conference championship results are used. If there is a tie, points are combined and divided by the number of teams involved in the tie. Point fractions were rounded up if above 0.5.
