Big fourth quarter leads Mountaineer women past MSU Denver

DENVER --- It's not always how you start, but how you finish – and the Western Colorado women's basketball finished in a big way Saturday afternoon in Denver.

The Mountaineers outscored MSU Denver 29-9 in the fourth quarter to turn a four-point deficit heading into the final quarter into a 67-51 victory at the Auraria Event Center. It moves Western to 3-0 on the season, the Mountaineers' best start to the season since starting 4-0 in 1980.

After going 2-for-20 from 3-point range through three quarters (including starting 0-for-12), Western (3-0 overall, 3-0 RMAC) found its stroke from long distance in the fourth – going 7-for-9 in the final quarter.

Trailing 42-38 going into the fourth – it was a trio of two-point baskets by Hannah Cooper in the opening 1:17 of the period to ignite a 9-0 run to start the quarter – capped by a Samantha Coleman 3-pointer at the 8:14 mark to make it 47-42 Western.

Western led the rest of the way, however MSU Denver (1-3, 0-2) still just trailed 56-51 with 2:44 remaining before three consecutive 3-pointers by Coleman in a 1:14 stretch helped the Mountaineers end the game on an 11-0 run.

Her five 3-pointers moved her to third on the Western all-time 3-point list – moving past Nikki Trujillo's total of 160. She's seven 3-pointers behind the No. 2 spot held by Jen Knight and 19 behind the top spot of 181 held by Brooke Pendergraft.
