GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- The Western Colorado wrestling team used a wild finish to beat Colorado Mesa in a non-RMAC dual after falling to Nebraska-Kearney in their season opener Thursday at Brownson Arena.

The Mountaineers picked up a 25-24 win over the Mavericks in their second dual of the day thanks to a pin at heavyweight from Sammy deSeriere in the final match. This followed Western losing to UNK 39-13 in their first dual of the day - and season.

In the win over CMU, the Mountaineers fell behind 12-0 after the first three matches of the night before Jason Hanenberg at 149 pounds picked up an 8-0 major decision victory to get Western on the board with four points. It was the start of 19 consecutive points for the Mountaineers that included a 4-3 victory by Tannen Kennedy at 157 thanks to ride time, a pin by Cole Mortensen at 165 pounds in the second period and a pin by Cole Hernandez at 174 pounds in the second period to make it 19-12 Western.

But the Mavs fought back as they picked up pins at 184 and 197 to take a 24-19 lead and the Mountaineers needing either a tech fall for the tie or a pin for the win. deSeriere left no doubt as he picked up a pin at the 1:45 mark in the first period to give the Mountaineers the win.

In their season-opening dual against UNK, the Mountaineers picked up four points on a major decision 17-6 win by 2019-20 All-American and ninth-ranked Patrick Allis at 133 pounds (his debut at that weight), six more on a pin from Hanenberg (ranked 12th at 141 pounds) in the opening period at 149 pounds and deSeriere battled for three points with a 5-4 decision over UNK's Lee Herrington in the heavyweight division.
