BOULDER, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's basketball team finished strong against Division-I Colorado, but fell short to the Buffs 77-50 in an exhibition game for the Mountaineers on Wednesday at the CU Events Center.
Western showed first-game rustiness throughout the first half, going 3-for-31 from the field in the first two quarters against the taller Buffs and trailed 39-15 at the break. The Mountaineers shook it off in the second half - going 12-for-28 from the field and were only outscored 38-35.
This includes a fourth quarter that saw the Mountaineers start with a 9-0 run thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from
Samantha Coleman and another from
Taytem Coleman that eventually led to outscoring the Buffs (1-0 - it wasn't an exhibition for Colorado) 20-13 in the quarter.
The height and length of Colorado led to the Buffs outscoring the Mountaineers 46-16 in the paint and 24-5 on second-chance points, however.
Taytem Coleman led the Mountaineers with 12 points (going 5-for-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range) to go along with four rebounds while
Samantha Coleman had 11 points and 10 rebounds,
Jessie Erickson had seven points, four rebounds and three assists,
Hannah Cooper had six points and five assists,
Jadyn Kanzler had five points and seven rebounds while
Mikaela Parker had a team-high three steals.
The Mountaineers are scheduled to open their season Dec. 4 at home against Black Hills State. No spectators will be allowed at this game or any home Mountaineer event through the end of 2020.
