KEARNEY, Neb. --- The Western Colorado wrestling team bounced back from dropping its opener at the Midwest Duals on Saturday to No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney to defeat No. 23 Northern State and Newman to go 2-1 and improve to 9-5 on the season.
The Mountaineers fell to the Lopers of UNK 32-9, to start the event but WCU freshman
Patrick Allis - ranked No. 10 at 125 pounds - for the second time this season knocked off the No. 1 wrestler at his weight class as he defeated Joshua Portillo 10-4.
Jason Hanenberg at 141 pounds also knocked off a ranked wrestler in No. 11 Jonathan Killingsworth 8-3 during the dual while
Hunter Mullin picked up an 8-4 win over UNK's Talon Seitz.
WCU edged Northern State 20-17 thanks in large part to a fall by
Sammy deSeriere at 285 pounds against Caleb Lefferdink in the first period to give the Mountaineers six points and a 20-17 victory. WCU also picked up a tech fall from Allis for five points while freshman
Giovanni Cassioppi picked up a 4-3 win over a ranked opopnent in No. 10 Caden Moore at 149 pounds.
Cole Mortensen (157 pounds) and Mullin (174 pounds) also won for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers again won a tight one against Newman, winning 21-17 thanks to pin from Allis and victories from
Nicholas Braswell (141),
Michael Thelen (165), Mullin (174),
Ruger Wyneken (184) and deSeriere (285) to close out the event on a high note.
WCU returns to RMAC action next week as the Mountaineers head to Grand Junction to take on San Francisco State 5 p.m. Thursday before returning home to host Colorado School of Mines 7 p.m. Saturday at Paul Wright Gym.
