GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado wrestling team hits the road to Nebraska as they take part in the Midwest Duals on Saturday hosted by Nebraska-Kearney.
The Mountaineers take on Nebraska-Kearney (8 a.m. MT), Northern State (9:30 a.m. MT) and Newman (11 a.m. MT) at the event.
The Mountaineers are coming off a convincing win over rival Adams State 31-12 on Jan. 16 in Alamosa to move to 2-0 in RMAC duals this season (WCU is the defending RMAC champion). While WCU limited their losses to three points apiece, the Mountaineers picked up bonus points in five of their six wins - including three pins and two tech falls.
In the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll released Tuesday - a poll based on wrestlers ranked in the top 12, not team performance - WCU dropped out of the top 25 as only
Patrick Allis at 125 pounds (No. 10) and
Jimmy LaConte at 174 pounds (No. 12) remain ranked. Allis leads the Mountaineer in wins with 19 and he and LaConte each have a Mountaineer-best six pins.
The Mountaineers are 9-16 all-time against host Nebraska-Kearney, though WCU edged them last season 18-17. Against Northern State, the Mountaineers are 3-0 - including winning two seasons ago 40-9. WCU is 2-0 all-time against Newman, last wrestling in a dual against the Jets in 2011-12 - a 30-15 Western Colorado win.
