SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- The No. 23 Western Colorado wrestling team opened a three-dual road trip with a 24-12 loss to Augustana on Thursday night at the Elmen Center.
The dual started well for the Mountaineers as freshman
Patrick Allis - ranked No. 3 at 125 pounds in the latest NWCA rankings - pinned Augustana's Ethan Cota in 4 minutes, 33 seconds, to move to 14-5 on the season (including 3-0 in duals).
WCU picked up three more points at 149 as fellow freshman
Giovanni Cassioppi picked up a 6-2 win over Augustana's Keaten Schorr to make it 9-6 Mountaineers.
But the Mountaineers dropped the next three weight classes (including a tough overtime loss for
Michael Thelen) before #12
Ruger Wyneken at 184 pounds defeated Augustana's Jackson Sweeney in overtime 8-6 to cut the Viking lead to 15-12.
Augustana clinched the match at 197 with a pin and also won at 285 to come away with the 24-12 win.
The Mountaineers return to action 11 a.m. Saturday as they travel to take on No. 15 Minnesota State University - Mankato.
