GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's basketball team made it five wins in a row as they had four players reach double figures in defeating Adams State 61-44 on Saturday at Paul Wright Gym.
It's the second five-plus game win streak the Mountaineers (11-4 overall, 9-2 RMAC) have put together this season after winning six in a row from Nov. 29-Dec. 6.
The win also keeps WCU in sole possession of third place, two full games ahead of four teams tied for fourth place while the Mountaineers sit a game back of Westminster for second place and two back of Colorado Mesa. WCU - interestingly enough - plays next at Westminster on Friday.
As for Saturday's game, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 13-6 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Grizzlies (2-15, 2-9) each of the final three quarters to pull away for the win.
The Mountaineers took advantage of their size advantage and scored 38 points in the paint while forcing 28 Adams State turnovers. This helped overcome a relatively cold shooting night from 3-point range as WCU shot 20 percent (4-for-20).
Katie Dalton led WCU with 14 points to go along with two blocks, two steals and two rebounds.
Hannah Cooper had 11 points, five rebounds and two assists for the Mountaineers,
Gabie Doud had 10 points and four rebounds while
Jadyn Kanzler had 10 points and two boards.
After taking on Westminster on Friday, the Mountaineers will travel to take on Dixie State - which is one of the four teams tied for fourth in the RMAC - on Saturday, making it a key road trip for WCU.
