GUNNISON, Colo. --- The No. 23 Western Colorado wrestling team returns to RMACÂ action and continues to defend their 2019 conference title as the Mountaineers hit the road to take on No. 11 Adams State 6 p.m. Thursday at Plachy Hall in Alamosa.
The Mountaineers are coming off going 4-1 in duals this past weekend, beating UNC Pembroke 27-10 at home on Friday and defeating Fort Hays State (25-18), Indianapolis (30-17) and Findlay (39-9) while falling to Air Force during action at the 30th Annual Tracy Borah Duals at the Mountaineer Field House in Gunnison.
WCU has four wrestlers ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings with freshman
Patrick Allis third at 125 pounds with an 18-6 overall record, sophomore
Cody Fatzinger ranked 11th at 133 pounds with a 11-8 mark, freshman
Jimmy LaConte sitting at No. 11 at 174 pounds with a 14-9 record and sophomore
Ruger Wyneken ranked 12th at 184 pounds with an 11-3 mark on the season.
This will be the 84th meeting between the Mountaineers and Adams State with WCU holding a 47-35-1 all-time record against the Grizzlies, including winning the previous six meetings. Last season in Gunnison, the Mountaineers trailed 13-3 at the midway point but rallied to tie it 16-16 heading into 285 pounds before
Sammy deSeriere pinned his opponent to give the Mountaineers a 22-16 victory.
This season Adams State is 2-1 in duals with wins over San Francisco State (25-20) and Simon Fraser (36-9) and falling to MSU-Mankato (22-21), a Mankato team the Mountaineers defeated (24-19).
The Grizzlies have a trio of wrestlers ranked in Jonathan Andretta ranked fourth at 133 pounds, Noah Hermosillo ranked third at 141 pounds and Josiah Rider ranked sixth at 149 pounds.
