Mountaineer women pull away in second, defeat NMHU 64-43

GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's basketball team used a 12-0 run late in the second quarter and never looked back on its way to a 64-43 win over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at Paul Wright Gym.

WCU (9-4 overall, 7-2 RMAC) has won three in a row and improves its home record to 4-0 on the season.

The Mountaineers trailed the Cowgirls (1-13, 0-9) 20-17 with 5:28 left in the second quarter before a Jessie Erickson basket ignited the 12-0 run that was capped on a three-point play by Katie Dalton (assisted by Erickson) to give WCU a 29-20 advantage. The Mountaineers eventually took a 29-21 lead into the half.

It was more of the same in the second half as Samantha Coleman drained a pair of 3-pointers in the opening two minute of the third quarter to make it a 14-point advantage and the Mountaineers lead wouldn't go lower than 11 the rest of the contest.

The defense again shined for WCU as it held the Cowgirls to 29.4 percent shooting, including 6-for-26 from 3-point range.

Taytem Coleman and Samantha Coleman paced the Mountaineers offensively with each scoring 12 - including four 3-pointers apiece. Jadyn Kanzler had nine points, Dalton had eight points, six rebounds and three blocks, Erickson had eight points, six rebounds and two steals and Gabie Doud finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

The Mountaineers are at home again next week as they host Fort Lewis 5:30 p.m. Friday in their White Out Game before hosting Adams State 5 p.m. Saturday.
