WREST | Conference title on the line for Western at Battle in Brownson

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Battle in Brownson returns this Wednesday when Western Colorado University wrestling travels to Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado. The 14th-ranked Mountaineers are scheduled to face the Mavericks at 6 p.m. in Brownson Arena for the final dual of the season.

Wednesday's dual has conference championship implications for the Mountaineers. With a win against CMU (8-9, 2-4 RMAC), Western (13-4, 5-1 RMAC) would earn a share of the conference title with Colorado School of Mines (11-3, 6-1 RMAC). Mountaineer wrestling last won a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title in 2014.

The Orediggers finished their dual season on Feb. 6 with a 23-11 win over CMU.

Wednesday will be the 57th dual between the two Western Slope universities. The Mountaineers have a 30-25-1 record against CMU and have won the last four, including a 33-15 win earlier this season.

Western enters the week after two big Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual victories over seventh-ranked Colorado State University – Pueblo and Adams State University.

The Mountaineers are ranked 14th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II Tournament Rankings and are tied for 17th in the NWCA Dual Rankings. CMU is receiving votes in both polls.

Individually, Western's Brandon Supernaw and Konnor Schmidt are both ranked in the top-five of their weight classes.

Supernaw is ranked first at 174 pounds and has an unblemished 16-0 record. The senior and returning All-American has earned bonus points in 62.5 percent of his matches this season.

Schmidt has a 20-5 record this season and is ranked fifth at 184 pounds. Also a returning All-American, Schmidt has an 8-1 record since dropping to 184 pounds in January.

The Mavericks have one wrestler currently ranked in Eduardo Penha. Penha is ranked 10th at 141 pounds.

Western's Jason Hanenberg, 19-9 this season, will have the difficult task of facing Penha. In the first dual against CMU this season, the Mountaineers forfeited at 141 pounds.

Wednesday, Western will look to avenge losses sustained at 157 and 165 pounds during the team's dual against CMU earlier in the season.

Mountaineer fans are encouraged to purchase tickets online instead of waiting to purchase at the gate to ensure seating before the event sells out. Tickets can be purchased online at CMUMavericks.com/tickets.

Western fans planning to attend the dual at CMU are also invited to take part in a pre-dual gathering at Tequila's - 2560 North Ave. in Grand Junction. The gathering will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Those unable to attend the duals can follow live online by clicking the links provided above, and by following Western Wrestling on social media (@WCUWrestling).
