OGDEN, Utah --- The Western Colorado women's basketball team got key performances from veteran
Samantha Coleman and newcomer
Hannah Cooper and combined it with a strong defensive showing as the Mountaineers defeated Division-I Weber State 58-49 on Wednesday night at Dee Events Center.
Coleman, an All-RMAC performer last season for WCU, scored a game-high 22 points, went 5-for-12 from 3-point range, and added six rebounds while Cooper, a freshman from El Paso, Texas, displayed her all-around game with 12 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and six assists to lead the Mountaineers.
Combine that with a defensive effort that saw WCU force Weber State into 20 turnovers while holding them to 39.1 percent shooting.
WCU jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the opening two minutes that included 3-pointers from Coleman and
Jessie Erickson, but found itself down 23-19 in the final minute of the second quarter before Coleman drained a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in the half to cut the Weber State lead to 23-22.
The game remained close in the third quarter before Coleman - again - drained a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds of the quarter, this time to give the Mountaineers a 39-38 lead.
WCU led the rest of the way - building a lead as large as 11 points before winning by nine.
Along with Coleman and Cooper,
Jadyn Kanzler came off the bench to score seven points, and while the team shot 34 percent from the field, the Mountaineers went 16-for-22 from the free throw line (compared to 11-for-21 for Weber State).
The Mountaineers are off until playing their final exhibition game of the season Nov. 10 at Colorado State.
