GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University plays their home opener on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Fort Lewis College. However, the Mountaineers will face the University of Nebraska – Kearney first on Friday at 1 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Western (0-1-1, 0-0 RMAC) will be looking for their first win of the season on Friday against UNK (1-1-0, 0-0 MIAA). The Mountaineers face the Lopers at Walker Field on Colorado Mesa University's campus in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-1 tie against Academy of Art University. Western dominated for most of the match, scoring a late equalizer in the 80
th minute. Western lost their first match of the season to Dixie State University 0-3.
UNK enters the match having tied Minnesota State University – Moorhead on Sept. 3, 0-0. Two days earlier, the Lopers defeated Montana State University – Billings in their season opener, 2-1.
Friday will be the first matchup between the two schools.
On Sunday, the Mountaineers play their home and conference opener against Fort Lewis College (0-1-1, 0-0 RMAC) at 11 a.m. on Gateway Field. It will be the seventh matchup between these two schools with FLC leading the series 2-3-1.
Western is 2-1-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference openers since officially becoming full members in women's soccer for the 2013 season.
Last year, FLC defeated the Mountaineers 2-1 in Gunnison on Oct. 2.
The Skyhawks enter the weekend having lost their last match 2-0 to West Texas A&M. FLC tied Eastern New Mexico University 2-2 in the season opener on Sept. 1.
FLC plays Angelo State University on Friday at 1 p.m. in Durango, Colorado prior to Sunday's game in Gunnison.
The Skyhawks were picked to finish eighth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
