GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's basketball had No. 5 Colorado State University – Pueblo on the ropes Friday night in Paul Wright Gym. However, a fourth quarter run gave the Thunderwolves a 72-52 win.
Western (6-19, 5-16 RMAC) took a two-point lead, 40-38, with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Mountaineers were in position to pull off one of the biggest upsets in school history.
Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, CSU-Pueblo (26-1, 20-1 RMAC) took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring Western 21-7 to finish the game.
The Mountaineers continually pushed the Thunderwolves on Friday. The Mountaineers outscored CSU-Pueblo 24-21 in the third quarter.
Sadie Stroup led Western in scoring with 12 points. All 12 points came from three-pointers as Stroup went 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from beyond the arc.
Molly Rohrer led CSU-Pueblo on offense, scoring 18 points.
Western will wrap up the season Saturday night in Gunnison against New Mexico Highlands University at 5 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym. The Mountaineers will also honor four seniors playing their final career games prior to Saturday night's game.
