WREST | Western pushes past Adams State

GUNNISON, Colo. – Three pins and one technical fall helped No. 19 Western State Colorado University defeat rival Adams State University on Friday night in Paul Wright Gym. The Mountaineers defeated the Grizzlies 29-18.
 
Western (7-6, 3-2 RMAC) and ASU (1-10, 0-7 RMAC) started the dual at 141 pounds on Friday night.
 
After getting out to a quick 3-0 lead in the dual, the Mountaineers came storming back at 149 pounds. Ian Steen earned his fifth pin of the season, defeating ASU's Devin Vasquez by fall in 2:06.
 
The Grizzlies would get those six points back in the following bout, earning a fall and taking a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth match of the night.
 
Western's 165-pound Brendan Gonzales put the Mountaineers ahead for good in the next match, pinning Isaac Lopez in 56 seconds.
 
Brandon Supernaw added three more points to the Western lead, winning by 3-2 decision over Koery Windham. The Mountaineers took a 15-9 lead heading into the sixth match of the dual.
 
The Mountaineers only allowed three ASU team points in the next four matches.
 
Mick Dougharity earned the Mountaineers more bonus points after winning by technical fall at 197 pounds over Khalil Gipson.
 
At 285 pounds, Ben Price pulled off an upset victory over ASU's Tuli Laulu. Price came back from being down one point in the third period to winning by a 3-1 decision.
 
Ronald Wardleigh continued his dominance at 125 pounds by earning his 13th fall against Division II opponents. Wardleigh pinned Darek Huff in 3:37 seconds, solidifying Western's win over the Grizzlies.
 
ASU's 133-pounder, Martin Ramirez, would win by technical fall in the final match of the night to make the final score 29-18.
 
The Mountaineers will be back on the mat on Saturday night at 7 p.m. against New Mexico Highlands University in Paul Wright Gym. It will be the final dual of the season for the Mountaineers and they will honor their three seniors, Mick Dougharity, Zane Rich and Ronald Wardleigh before the start of the dual.
