GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's soccer won their first match of 2016 on Saturday. After tying their first match of the year, Western defeated Montana State University – Billings in overtime, 1-0.
Western (1-0-1, 0-0 RMAC) looked to be headed towards another tie after playing to a scoreless draw on Thursday. However,
Jessica Kresl (Jr., Aztec, New Mexico) managed to earn the game winner in the 94
th minute of the first overtime.
Kresl has been the biggest offensive weapon for the Mountaineers in the first two matches of the season. So far Kresl has recorded one goal, 13 shots and seven shots on target.
Earning her second shutout of the season, Western keeper
Katie Simpson-Johnson (Jr., Boulder, Colorado) made eight saves against MSUB (0-2, 0-0 GNAC).
The Mountaineers and Yellowjackets finished even with 15 shots each. However, Western held the advantage in set pieces as they earned nine corner kicks to MSUB's two.
MSUB's Alexa Iacolucci and Kylee Wolfe led the match in total shots, with four each.
Western will continue the season next Thursday in Billings, Montana against the University of Mary.
