GUNNISON, Colo. - Harlie Williams' double-double was not enough for Western State Colorado University to overcome Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
Â
Williams battled for 32 minutes to get 10 points and 10 rebounds to keep the Mountaineers hanging around throughout the game. The teams battled through the first three quarters before the Griffins were able to get themselves some breathing room at the foul line in the fourth quarter.
Â
After going down 2-9 to start the game the Mountaineers used an eight point run to take a 10-9 lead on a pair of three-pointers from Williams and
Brianna Wilber. The Griffins would retake the lead on the next play with a jumper by Sicilee Williams to finish the quarter scoring.
Â
Down one to start the second quarter, the Mountaineers would continue to fight. Cara Jackson-Brown forced a two Griffins' turnover and scored back-to-back layups to start the quarter and take a three-point lead. That lead was short lived as back-to-back three pointers by the Griffins' helped them finish the first half with a 26-24 lead.
Â
Coming out of halftime, Wilber would tie the game for the Mountaineers with two of her team-high 11 points. Westminster then went on a seven point run over the next three minutes. Western fought back to get the lead down to one before finishing the third quarter down 37-40.
Â
Turnovers, fouls, and missed shots would haunt the Mountaineers comeback attempts in the fourth quarter. The Griffins hit six-of-six free throws during a nine point run to take an insurmountable 51-39 lead over the Mountaineers with 3:28 left in the game.Â
Â
Riley Reidhead and Sydnee Taylor combined for 23 of the Griffins 55 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point land.
Â
Also contributing to the Mountaineers effort was
Carra Jackson-Brown, who finished the game with six points, and
Sadie Stroup, who had five points and five rebounds.
Â
The Mountaineers will continue the season next Friday when they host rival Adams State University at 5:30 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
