Western State Colorado University women's basketball team opened up their season and the Coach
Lora Westling era with a pair of exhibition road games this week.
On Sunday in Colorado Springs, the Mountaineers were out-paced by Air Force during a 48-71 loss.
Air Force turned a 22-10 first quarter into a 16-point half time lead over Western and never looked back. Sarah Peirce scored 23 points, going 4-10 from 3-point range to lead the Falcons.
Leading the way for the Mountaineers were junior transfer guard
Brianna Wilber and junior forward
Katie Najvar. Wilber lead the team in scoring with 11 points and two steals. Najvar, pulled in 12 rebounds with six coming of the offensive glass to go along with her two blocks.
On Tuesday in Phoenix, Ariz., Western's 24 point fourth quarter was unable to overcome the hot shooting and stingy defense of Grand Canyon University for a 48-68 loss.
Marina Laramie led the way for the Lady 'Lopes with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals.
For the Mountaineers, sophomore
Kaylynn Bush scored 11 and senior
Harlie Williams had nine, with both putting in a pair of 3-pointers. Senior
Sydnie Lengyel was also able to pull down nine rebounds while coming off the bench.
The Mountaineers open their regular season against Tarleton State University at the CSU-Pueblo Al Kaly Shrine Classic on Nov. 18 in Pueblo, Colorado.
