GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - It was the Battle in Brownson between Western State Colorado University wrestling and Colorado Mesa University Thursday night. The dual lived up to the hype as the result was still up for grabs through the heavyweight match. In the end, it was the No.13 Mavericks who defeated the No. 5 Mountaineers 23-17.
After winning the previous year's dual in dramatic fashion, Western (9-2, 5-1 RMAC) was unable to duplicate their success this season's rendition. The dual loss snaps an 11-straight conference dual victory streak for the Mountaineers.
After going down 20-3 to begin the match, Western's
Elliot Copeland (Sr., Bennetts, Colorado) helped spark a ferocious comeback. Copeland, Western's 174 pound wrestler dominated his match earning a fall at the 1:22 mark. This fall put the score 20-9 in favor of CMU (12-0, 6-0 RMAC).
Copeland was followed by
Kyle Piatt (Sr., Olathe, Colorado) at 184 pounds. Piatt secured a 22-9 major decision before
Sam Mangum (Sr., McAllen, Texas) earned another Mountaineer major decision, 10-2 at 197 pounds.
The late comeback put the Mountaineers down only three points with one match remaining.
At 285 pounds,
Peter Anguiano (Sr., Elk Grove, California) and CMU's Jordan Passehl were unable to claim victory during regulation and the match was forced into overtime. Unfortunately, it was Passehl that came out on top, scoring a takedown and putting the score in favor of the Mavericks 23-17.
Western will continue the season Feb. 12 at home against New Mexico Highlands University.
