GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western State Colorado University women's basketball team hung with RMAC leader Colorado Mesa for a majority of the game, but the Mavericks outscored the Mountaineers 22-10 in the final eight minutes to come away with a 58-46 win Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym.
Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and
Taylor Long (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif.) each totaled nine points to lead the Mountaineers. McIntosh also recorded a team-best eight boards.
Shanna Halalilo led the Mavericks with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Erin Reichle finished with 15 points.
Western (4-20, 3-17 RMAC) opened up the game on a 5-0 run before a three-pointer by Halalilo gave the Mavericks a 9-8 advantage with 15:32 to play in the half.
Teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until a triple by
Sadie Stroup (So., Foresthill, Calif.) pushed the Mountaineer lead to 14-10 midway through the period.
A 6-0 run for CMU (20-4, 17-3 RMAC) put the Mavericks back on top at 16-14 before taking a 21-16 lead with 4:09 remaining in the half.
A jumper by
Harlie Williams (So., Norwood, Colo.) pulled the Mountaineers within one possession before Long knotted the contest again for a 23-all halftime score.
Neither team was able to take more than a two-point advantage for the first 11:46 of the second half until a three-point play by Erika Musante gave the Mavericks a 40-36 lead with just over eight minutes to play.
However, Western would not let CMU extend the lead any farther as a jumper by McIntosh pulled the Mountaineers within one.
The Mavericks answered with two free throws from Halalilo before a fastbreak layup by Musante made it 44-39 CMU with 6:55 to play.
Western came within three on the ensuing possession but CMU pulled away from the Mountaineers in the final minutes to record the victory.
The Mountaineers close out the season next weekend when they host Fort Lewis and Adams State on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games are set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
