GUNNISON, Colo. - Before Sunday's non-conference match against Fort Lewis College, Western State Colorado University honored seven seniors playing their final match as Mountaineers. In a tightly contested match, Western and FLC played to a scoreless draw on Gateway.
It was a defensive battle as scoring opportunities were in short supply for both Western (7-7-4, 4-5-2 RMAC) and FLC (11-4-3, 8-2-1 RMAC). Neither team broke double digits in shots during regulation and only 13 total shots were on target for the entire match.
Mountaineer goalie
Meghan Jedrzejewski (Sr., Longmont, Colorado) recorded her seventh shutout of the season and third in-a-row. Jedrzejewski made five saves to preserve the tie.
For Jedrzejewski,
Tanisha Anderson (Sr., Arvada, Colorado),
Samantha Braun (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah),
Ari Gibeault (Sr., Madera, California),
Elyza Montano (Sr., El Sobrante, California),
Sadie Stark (Sr., Milliken, Colorado), and
Brianna Vega (Sr., Vallejo, California) it was their final match after helping start the Western women's soccer program in 2012. These seven seniors own the Western record book as their names appear in nearly every category.
Heading into Sunday, the Mountaineers had an outside shot at making the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. Western needed losses from New Mexico Highlands University and CSU-Pueblo in order to make the tournament. However, NMHU earned a win and CSU-Pueblo earned a draw, eliminating the Mountaineers from the postseason. Western ended the season tied with CSU-Pueblo for seventh place, the highest finish in program history.
Montano and Braun led the match in shots on goal with three, and tied with FLC's Jenna Brown for total shots with three.
