WSOC | Mountaineers prep for Cougars in Pink

GUNNISON, Colo. –  Western State Colorado University women's soccer team will go up against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Gateway Field in Gunnison. The match will be a non-conference match that won't go towards conference standings for both teams. It will also serve as the Mountaineer's Pink Game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
 
Western State is currently tied with Adams State for fifth in the conference with ten points, with the top-six advancing to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. The Mountaineers (6-5-2, 3-4-1 RMAC) have three remaining conference-counting matches left this season, including a crucial rematch against Adams State. Also remaining on the conference schedule is Colorado Mines (ranked No. 23 in the nation last week) and Colorado Christian University who remains without a win this season.
 
The Mountaineers are led by sophomore forward Jennifer Kahle who is tied for the most goals and points in the conference. RMAC All-Academic First Team selection Elyza Montano is tied for eighth in the conference in goals with four. Also leading the team is Sadie Stark, tied for second in the conference in assists.
 
Western State has put on the heat this season, ranking tied for second in total goals and scoring average per game in the conference. On the defensive side of the pitch, the Mountaineers are fifth in opponent scoring average and tied for first with No.14-ranked Fort Lewis College in number of saves.
 
The Mountaineers will host one more weekend of games this season. Adams State comes to town for a rematch of the 2-1 victory for Western State October 30th for the last remaining conference-counting game. November 1st the Mountaineers host nationally-ranked Fort Lewis College in the final regular season match.
