GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Thursday night, the Western State Colorado University wrestling program competed in their first dual of the season. The defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Dual Champions made quick work of RMAC opponent San Francisco State University on a neutral mat in Grand Junction, Colorado. Western won the dual by a score of 31-6, earning five decisions, one major decision and two falls.
Freshman
Trenton Piatt (Fr., Olathe, Colorado) got the Mountaineers going early, winning the first match of the night by earning a three point decision.
Trenton Piatt defeated SFSU's Brandon Vu 9-7.
After tying the match at three points, 141-pound
Corbin Bennetts (Jr., Buena Vista, Colorado) put the Mountaineers back on top, defeating Jerrold De La Rosa 9-0, earning a major decision. The Mountaineers would lead the rest of the way.
Western's first pin came from
Austin Harris (Jr., Windsor, Colorado) at 165 pounds. Harris earned the fall 3:48 into the match. The second Mountaineer pin came in the final match of the night.
Peter Anguiano (Sr., Elk Grove, California) completed the fall in his 285-pound match against SFSU's Tanner Blank after just 2:02.
Also earning decisions Thursday night for Western were wrestlers
Devon Zavala (RFr., Denver, Colorado) at 149 pounds,
Shawn Beiriger (RFr., Del Norte, Colorado) at 157 pounds,
Kyle Piatt (Sr., Olathe, Colorado) at 184 pounds and
Sam Mangum (Sr., McAllen, Texas) at 197 pounds.
