GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - In the first game of the Colorado Mesa Classic in Grand Junction, Colorado on Friday, Western State Colorado University women's basketball earned their first victory of the season. The Mountaineers defeated McMurry University by three points, 70-67.
Western (1-2, 0-0 RMAC) and McMurry (1-5, 0-0 LSC) exchanged buckets nearly every time down the floor. The largest lead of the game was six points by Western at the very start of the second half.
In the first half alone, there were nine lead changes and the score was tied 10 times.
The Mountaineers took a three-point lead, 32-29, into halftime after
Taylor Long (Fr., Moreno Valley, California) hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining on the clock.
Western led for much of the second half. McMurry took their first lead of the second half with 6:36 left. It took the Mountaineers almost two minutes, but they regained the lead on a
Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) jumper. McIntosh scored 14 of her team leading 22 points in the second half.
The Mountaineers were able to hang on for the win, making 6-of-6 free throws in the final 21 seconds.
Sadie Stroup (So., Foresthill, California) was the only other Mountaineer to score in double figures. Stroup scored 14 points, making 4-of-7 three-point attempts.
Western will face Simon Fraser University in the final game of the Colorado Mesa Classic tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
