GUNNISON, Colo. - After starting the first half of the season unbeaten, the Western State Colorado University women's soccer team suffered their first defeat of 2014 on Sunday. In the Mountaineers' 10th game of the season, Western hosted New Mexico Highlands University. The Cowgirls upset the Mountaineers, taking a 1-0 win.
Western (5-1-4, 2-1-3 RMAC) and Highlands (5-3-2, 2-2-2 RMAC) were each scoreless at the end of regulation and went into overtime. It was the fourth consecutive match the Mountaineers went into overtime and the sixth match overall.
After just 3:40 into the first overtime, NMHU earned their third corner kick of the match. The Cowgirl's Jasmine Waugaman took the kick and crossed it into the middle of the box. Western was unable to get a head on the ball and NMHU's Hannah Dahlquist took advantage, scoring the game winner with a header.
Both teams played neck and neck for the entire match. The unrelenting pace of play seemed to favor the Mountaineers, but after four consecutive overtime matches, Western landed on the losing end.
NMHU's goal in overtime gave the Cowgirls one more shot than the Mountaineers. NMHU outshot Western 12-11.
